Pretty sexist huh? How come its not okay for television shows to post questionable material, but Dr. Pepper has free range to say anything that it wants? And talk about being stereotypical! Everything that a man loves? Well women are going to be one less thing if commercials like this keep popping up.
Here are some questions:
If you are working for Dr. Pepper and you could control the content that people will see in order to purchase your product, would you allow advertising like this to be released?
What does this say about humans as a society today?
Are we that different that men and women cannot enjoy the same things?
Just because something is better for us, does it mean that men cannot enjoy as well?
Can you name other instances in which companies have been sexist in conveying their product?
Does this commercial change your view of Dr. Pepper?
Will you continue to drink Dr. Pepper even after this commercial was released?
Do you have any suggestions as to how Dr. Pepper could still portray their message of great flavors and less calories that even guys will find masculine?
No, I would not allow this commercial on the air because its pretty offensive, and is Dr. Pepper only trying to sell their product to half of our human race? last time i checked, women like Dr. Pepper as much as men do, terrible marketing strategy. It says to society that makers of this commercial are very sexist and can't produce their own idea on a commercial. This commercial idea is way over played (Old Spice, Dairy Queen, Edge shaving cream). And no, we are not different, Dr. Pepper's strategy to sell their drink was not a very good one. This commercial, doesn't change my opinion on Dr. Pepper, I love Dr. Pepper. I will still drink it, but having said that, it wasn't a very good marketing strategy. My suggestion to Dr. Pepper is maybe showing to fit people drinking Dr. Pepper saying how there are less calories in this drink.
ReplyDeleteIn my mind, Dr. Pepper is a cool drink that provides a good flavor and wonderful experiences. Actually I seldom buy products just by trusting the advertisements which I think are exaggerating the functions and results. But the advertisements really can make the products annoying to me just like what Dr. Pepper’s advertisement did. At the end of the advertisement it’s saying “IT IS NOT FOR WOMEN”. This really makes me feel uncomfortable as a female consumer. So if I was working for Dr. Pepper and could control the content that people would see in order to purchase the product, I will not allow advertisement like this released. It splits the society by defining what kind of beverage that men can drink while women cannot. Men and women may enjoy different things regarding their different personality and gender behaviors, but for something to drink, sexual differentiation is far from the right way. So I probably won’t drink Dr. Pepper any more just as the advertisement told me. And ironically since most of family shopping was done by women, I believe the sale of Dr. Pepper would receive a hit just by that advertisement.
ReplyDeleteThis commercial, specifically saying that the drink is only for men, is somewhat discriminatory towards women and I can see how people would consider it sexist and offensive. It is true that men and women are biologically different and that is an undeniable fact. There are things that are specific to the male biological needs that aren’t for women, but soda is not one of those things. When the drink has nothing legitimate that ties it to one gender over the other, then it’s slightly unnecessary and inappropriate for them to say, “It’s not for women.” Advertisements are almost always aimed towards a certain gender, because certain genders are more often consumers of those products. It is normal for commercials to target their main consumers and aim “manly” things towards men, but to tell women not to consume it isn’t right. Also, it doesn’t seem like a good idea to exclude consumers and tell them not to buy the product. That is discriminating and also is poor advertising. You would think that companies would want all people to purchase the product, even if they think that mostly men would enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteThis commercial is bit ridiculous to say the least. Even though it is just a commercial, it is very offensive toward woman. If I worked for Dr. Pepper I would not let this advertisement be released. Not just because it is offensive but it only sells the product to men. What about woman, don’t they want them to buy Dr. Pepper also? They should change this commercial so it relates to both men and woman, so they will both buy it. One possibility they could do to change the commercial is have men and woman being active like playing a sport and then drinking Dr. Pepper and talk about how it is only 10 calories and still tastes great. This might work better because it can still be considered a masculine drink but it is not being derogatory toward woman. Men and woman are very different but that doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy the same food and drinks, so to say it is a man’s drink it makes the commercial sexist.
ReplyDeleteFCC controls a lot, however, as the blog indicates, this commercial might call for somewhat regulation. Dr. Pepper is debatably popular, since some people are really into it while others might hate it. After watching this commercial, I searched for background info. It’s of course sexist but it is not sexist through the way people learn from this commercial. USA Today says that a research shows that “men shy away from diet drinks that aren't perceived as manly enough”, thus Dr. Pepper releases this kind of new drink provides low calories but not “diet” at all. This idea is interesting for me. Why are diet drinks not manly? That women care more about their weight has become a common sense for the society, thus it is not that good to care about weight for men. Thus, not the commercial but the design of this drink is sexist. Women care about their weight because men care about women’s weight. Furthermore, the public emphasize too much on women’s appearance. Drinking diet drink is a good way to keep not only fit but also healthy. It’s economically a good way to boost market share by considering a demand of a specific group (men who need diet drink but are afraid of being not manly in this case), however, the idea behind is not good.
ReplyDeleteThis commercial is so stupid, it’s funny. I’ve seen this on TV numerous times and I still can’t figure out what they are trying to say here. I guess the ad says that Dr. Pepper is now providing a drink to men who want great taste and fewer calories, and then at the end they randomly say, this isn’t for women. I’d have to say that previously the male society has thought of the idea of men counting calories or watching what they eat as the male gender as conforming to female expectations of the male race. No, it’s just trying this thing called being healthy. Advertising have one goal in mind- Get your attention. How they do it, it really doesn’t matter. This ad does exactly what it’s supposed to do, make the men laugh at the idea of how stupid this commercial is while the women gasp at the line this isn’t for women. From there, the arguing about the commercial begins and the next thing you know Dr. Pepper is in the fridge the next day because it’s manly and it makes the wife and girlfriend mad. Is Dr. Pepper that big of a deal to fight with a woman or a man over? I certainly hope not. But the ad is sexist enough to get someone’s attention which in turn gets their product sold.
ReplyDeleteWell this commercial has gotten everybody to talk about Dr. Pepper so i would say it is pretty successful. Kind of like a publicity stunt. I'm fine with this being aired on TV, there are some products that are specifically for men and some products specifically for women. Yeah this commercial stereotypes women but also stereotypes men.
ReplyDeleteI actually don't even think Dr. Pepper was trying to be sexist i think they were trying to sell their product. First by having an awesome commercial (yeah i think it is a particularly good commercial) and second by getting people attention who might think it is sexist. I actually feel the sexism in the commercial could be motivating for some women to get the Dr. Pepper.
Also i think the reason the commerical had to be extra manly is because it is trying to sell a diet drink. Diet drinks are usually sold as feminine, guys drink the real stuff and don't care! So they had to overcome that stereotype with another stereotype.
I think this commercial is stupid personally. I'm not offended by it really, I think they made themselves look stupid. I don't really like Dr. Pepper and so this will not encourage me to buy it, so that's fine, but I do think it's sexist. I also see though what Danny is saying when he said maybe women will want to buy this just to sort of prove the advertisement wrong. I would do it just because they told me not to, what are they going to do tell me I can't buy it? If I worked for Dr. Pepper I wouldn't want to run this ad because I think it makes the company look dumb. I would have done something with fit people as others were saying since it is only 10 calories. Yes, men and women are different but I don't see why foods and drinks should be aimed at one gender over another both are capable of eating pretty much whatever they want.
ReplyDeleteIf I were working for Dr. Pepper, I would not allow this advertisement to be shown on television and would do anything in my power to keep it off the air. I would see it as an embarrassment to my company because of the awful message it gives the audience. I don’t understand why the Dr. Pepper Company would run this commercial because I think it would just drive people away from their product. I think this commercial is very sexist. It also gives the impression that only men can drink Dr. Pepper 10 and that women are almost not good enough to drink this drink. This commercial definitely changes my view of Dr. Pepper and makes me think twice about buying this product. I think this ad definitely shows that sexism is still a relevant problem in society today and something should be done to change this division of males and females.
ReplyDeleteI saw this commercial pretty close to after it was released. I hated it. As a female consumer, why would I want to support a company or product that is sexist, especially so openly? The idea that a product is specifically for a certain gender based on calorie content is ridiculous. When’s the last time someone asked what you wanted to drink, specifically because of your gender? I would be embarrassed if I worked for the Dr. Pepper company. One of the things that most annoyed me was the question he asks to women: are you enjoying this? He’s referring to an action movie and then says of course you aren’t. I love action movies, and I know a lot of other women who do too. Really, if you’re going to try to be funny, at least be original. This add is just bad news for Dr. Pepper, as it irritates female customers out of buying their product. Last time I checked, we were still half the population.
ReplyDeleteIf i were working for Dr. pepper i would allow advertisement like this simply because it is harmless advertisement. It is a joke, and not meant to be taken seriously. The commercial is meant to appeal to men maybe because the large majority of dr pepper drinkers are male, or because its females and they are attempting to appeal to men to "get them on board". Either way it's not blatant sexism, as it is a joke. About humans in society today, this shows that we are only concerned about making money and advertising our product. In general advertisement is the tangible display of how messed up society is today. No, just because something is better for you does not mean men can't enjoy it, however in general it is directed more toward women. This commercial does not change my view of dr pepper, and if I did drink it, which i already don't, I would continue to drink it.
ReplyDeleteI would of course not allow this to go on the air it would give such negative feedback even if it was used as a satirical piece there are some line you do not cross and this cross it. Human society as a whole is unequal and will forever be unequal and the fight for it will continue regardless. Men and women do have a general trend for preference but that’s not always the rule and it all comes down to individual taste. There were tons of other advertisements we examine awhile back which used the same context such as got milk. No this will not change my view of Dr. Pepper it is just a product the image of the company they are trying to sell base on the idea who made it may change my view of them not the product. I will however change my view on Dr. Pepper when it change it 21 different flavors in its drink. I will drink whatever soda is in front of me but as for supporting it not so much. They can use another theme such as video gaming or something else instead of this one.
ReplyDeleteI am surprised this commercial was ever approved to be on the air. It is blatantly sexist and incredibly offensive to women. Though I am sure Dr. Pepper did not intend to directly offend anyone, they can't seem surprised at the reaction that got from the people that saw it. Personally, I am not offended by the commercial, though I know women that would be. I just find it unnecessary and in poor taste. If I were working for Dr. Pepper, I would never approve something like this to be broadcasted. There are so many other ways to convey a point that are not sexist or offensive. Why not go on how Dr. Pepper has a unique taste? Why not market the diet Dr. Pepper to all people and say that now the consumer can enjoy without the guilt? What I also noticed that was interesting is that they said "only 10 manly calories". They are making it seem like these are super calories that can make you an action movie star or give you ripped muscles like the actor. However, a calorie is a calorie and 10 calories are not going to do either of those things for you. This commercial does not change my view of Dr. Pepper because it was the advertising agencies fault for wanting to push the boundary and overstepping not the drink itself. If there was one reason I would stop drinking Dr. Pepper, it wouldn't be because of the sexism in this commercial, it would probably be due to the fact that there are 21 different flavors in it. That just seems unnatural..
ReplyDeleteI am surprised at the strategy that the advertisment company tried with this commercial. Their blatantly targeting men, and discriminating women. But what gets me is I don't see how this commercial could actually sell doctor pepper. They blatantly say that its only for men, and not for women, thats taking away half of the consumers that could potentially buy this product, and even as a guy I don't persuaded to buy the drink. I don't have a problem with this commercial airing but I do not see how it could be effective.
